Hurricane Season: Rope Essentials

Hurricane season is approaching in several areas of the United States, and some are predicting it will be more extreme than usual. Hurricanes can affect both inland and coastal residents, and it is important to be prepared. Rope and bungee cords are essential components to securely protect your home and yard.

Our high-quality ropes and cords are versatile, high-strength, and have excellent resistance to UV, abrasion, mildew, and chemicals. They have many uses both before and after a major storm, from helping secure items on your property beforehand to covering any home damage to prevent excess water from entering the home afterward.

Hurricane Preparedness Suggestions

Trim and tie down trees and/or branches

Hurricane prep is critical in protecting your property. As a result of storm impact, branches and trees are likely to be damaged. Falling debris can cause hurricane damage to the home and surrounding power lines. Weak branches can be trimmed or secured to prevent such damage. Other smaller trees can be secured and strengthened to help them survive the high winds.

Securing outdoor items

Gardening and cooking equipment (such as grills), HVAC systems, and any outdoor items should be moved to a safe area and secured in place. To further protect this equipment, a sturdy, waterproof tarp can be attached with a shock cord or rope to help keep it secure. Our 100% Polyester Rope or Bungee Shock Cord  (if more stretch is needed) is excellent for a successful application.

Boat and marine equipment

During such a storm, nothing unsecured should be trusted around the water. Your boat should be removed from the water, or if not possible fastened to a dock and covered to resist heavy winds and waves during hurricanes. Smaller boats, kayaks, and other water toys should be removed, covered, and securely fastened in place. Having a high-quality nylon rope (Boating and Marine Rope) is essential in setting yourself up to successfully weather the storm.

Fortify your roof

Regarding housing recommendations, some would suggest having roof hurricane strapping to guarantee your roof stays intact. This is probably a bit further than some will take it, but minor roof damage after a hurricane hits is a very real possibility. Having tarps and low-stretch rope available to provide a temporary solution to a damaged, leaking roof may help avoid additional water damage resulting from hurricane weather.
